USAFL Nationals Recap

On October 9th and 10th, the Portland Power sent it’s first ever full squad to the USAFL National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. 27 players made the trip along with our umpire/runner Andrew Daniel. This was quite an achievement, as many more experienced teams had fewer players than us. We’ve come a long way from the three players that attended at my first Nationals as a Portland player in 2005!

We had a couple of tough losses on Saturday, losing in a very tight game to an experienced Ohio Valley team after rallying to take the lead in the 2nd half in game #1, and to the eventual Division champions Austin, in a very physical game #2. The Austin boys told us we were their stiffest opposition at the tourny, including the final. The heat also played a role, as we played in 90 degree weather on both days.

On Sunday, we bounced back for our first ever win at nationals, demolishing Atlanta in our final game. Everything clicked from the first bounce, as we ran over the top of them. They only managed one goal late in the 40 minute game. Here are the scores:

Game #1 – Portland 7.4.46 to Ohio Valley 8.6.54

Game #2 – Portland 5.3.33 to Austin 7.10.52

Game #3 – Portland 11.6.72 to Atlanta 1.4.10

Special thanks to the club’s leadership group that made this weekend possible, in particular Andrew “Goose” Daniel who was tireless in our tag team efforts to make it a successful weekend. Thanks also to all of our club members and supporters who have contributed at our fundraising events throughout the season. Our players have gotten a taste of footy at it’s best and you can be guaranteed we will be bigger and better next year.

Cheers to a great year.
