From August 27-29, the Steelheads traveled down to San Francisco to compete in the 2012 Golden Gate Invitational Tournament against the Golden Gate Roos and the Los Angeles Dragons. 16 players traveled south by plane and car to represent Portland.
The first game of the tournament saw the Roos defeat the Dragons by a 2 goal margin in a toughly-contested match. Next up, the Steelheads took on Golden Gate and caught fire from the starting bounce. It was a dominant display as Portland out ran, tackled and kicked our way to a 50 point win!
In the final game of the tournament the Steelheads were the ones going back to back. LA had the wind and were up by 10 points at half time, but Portland held them well in a fatastic defensive display. The second half was tight and we edged back into it with a goal, but they won by 10 points. However, with each team winning and losing one match apiece, the Steelheads won the tournament on goal percentage on the strength of our win over Golden Gate.
It was the club’s first major road trip and our first tournament victory! It was a sweet moment for the team.
