Game 1 - Coach's Match Report
Posted March 26, 2006
Thanks
to everyone involved in the game on Sunday (especially Peter and Todd for
umpiring). It was a great start to the season and one of the closest
contests I've ever played in. Seattle had a very talented list of twelve,
with some very good Aussies in the mix. Portland had 12 also, equally as
talented, but somewhat inexperienced. We started with 10 a side and two
subs.
Portland's
inexperience showed in the early part of the game. Seattle had a strong
forward line and Portland struggled with the early match ups.
"Fingers" Purcell from Seattle seemed unstoppable, but by the
end of the quarter Portland came back into the contest through
persistence. Seattle was on top at quarter time 27 to 13.

We
started the second quarter with 9 a side (due to injuries). Portland came
out firing in the second quarter and played itself back into the game with
some exciting passages of play. Gavin started to take control at half
forward and Scott made some important stops in the back line. Hard running
from the center (Lumy, Martin and Damien), with Morgan controlling the
ruck and Portland was only 2 points behind at half time.
The
second half started with Aaron moving to half forward and this broke the
game open. Despite strong defensive play from Seattle they just had too
much to worry about, with Gavin, Aaron and Sean down forward. The two half
forwards brought down some screamers under pressure. Gavin added one goal
and Martin added two with a couple of left foot snaps. The backline proved
solid holding Seattle to 1 goal. Portland was up 60 to 50 at three quarter
time.
The
game was ours to win with a ten point lead and only 9 players for Seattle.
Within the first few minutes Lumy spotted Martin running down forward and
bombed it in. Martin grabbed the loose ball for another snap and goal.
Just the start we needed. Both teams were tired and Seattle refused to lie
down. The pressure was on all quarter. Some intelligent ruck work from
Morgan kept the ball deadlocked in the Seattle forward line as the clock
ran down. Seattle came back with two goals in the final quarter, but
Portland held on to win at the final siren 10-15-75 to 10-10-70. Goals:
Gavin 5?, Martin 3... please get back to me if you kicked a goal so I can
keep a goal tally for the club and the league. All in all a great team
effort. Congratulations to Sean on his 75th USAFL game and to all the new
guys on there first game.
