2008 Metro Game 1 - Match Report
Green's Mangle Mongrels

Written by Martin Coventry - Posted April 5, 2008

In the first game of the Portland Power Metro Series, the Greens take revenge for last years Grand Final loss with a dominant win over the Mongrels. Without their No.1 draft pick Michael "Robbo" Robertson (at home with new born Claire - Congrats!), the Mongrels were going to struggle, but were thought to have the edge in fitness. However, experience won the day.

The Greens got off to a flying start with a 5 goal to 0 first quarter. The Greens proved too strong in the middle with Morgan, Martin and new recruit Aussie, Mick. The Mongrels were shell shocked and could only muster 2 behinds.

First Quarter: Greens 5.7-37 vs Mongrels 0.2-2

The second quarter marked some changes. Ben came into the middle to ruck against Sean Quinn, who performed admirably on the ball. Morgan tried his stuff out in the forward line. The Mongrels fought back, lead by Ben busting through the middle, breaking tackle after tackle. Both teams played hard and ended the quarter with 2 goals a piece.

Second Quarter: Greens 7.10-52 vs Mongrels 2.4-16

The second half was much of the same with both teams playing hard footy in the trying conditions. In addition to the mud we had a hail storm to deal with, but play goes on. The Greens rang in some more changes to spread the workload. Scott Hager, after creating some great run of the half backline, had a go in the Ruck and earned himself a nice goal. Andrew Daniel snuck down forward for a goal and after dominating at full back Clay played the second half at full forward and kicked 3 goals.

The Mongrels contested hard across the field running all day. Ben was like a tank across the middle; Tyler Cox was very hard to stop with all his dodging and weaving; Tyler Barratt took a couple of nice marks; J. McPhee got his long arms into everything as usual; and Adam snapped a nice left foot goal under pressure. Scott Johnson played solid as usual for the Greens and new recruit Isaac showed off his speed.

All in all it was an excellent start to the season with a high standard of skill, despite the woeful conditions. We had a record attendance for a Portland metro game with 18 players. Keep up the good work, get to training and let's give Seattle a run for their money April 12.

Final Score: Greens 14.13-97 vs Mongrels 6.10-46.
