Metro Game 3 - Match Report
Mongrels Defeat Greens
for First Time in 2008
Written by Martin
Coventry - Posted June 2, 2008
The
Mongrels were hungry for their first win of the season after two hard
losses to the Greens. Mongrels were out in full force with the return of
Robbo, wily veteren John McPhee (he of the long arms) and Nabil. The
Greens were short without Clay, "mitts" Hager, Morgan and Sean
Paul (back in Ireland). Greens saw the return of Mick Sunderland in the
middle and picked up new recruits Michael Mangan and David Rae, with
occasional help from Adam and Kevin. The Mongrels had the more experienced
squad, but the Greens were keen.
First Quarter:
The
teams were evenly matched in the middle with Cooper taking on Nabil in the
ruck, Martin v Ben, and Mick v Greeny. Nabil had the ups early on and the
Mongrels looked dangerous out of the middle. They had a strong forward
line with Robbo busting loose at half forward and the height of Scott W
and Paul at full forward. The Mongrels came out hard and quickly put goals
on the board with a strong lead, mark and goal from Scott W. Ben was fired
up and apparently not hung over! He was proving hard to stop. He gathered
the ball at half forward, broke the tackle from Martin and threaded a goal
on the run. Martin settled things down with a mark and goal for the
Greens, against the flow. The Mongrels came back hard again getting loose
through Ben, Greeny and Robbo. Another nice mark and goal from Scott W and
the Mongrels were edging away. A much needed goal was snuck through for
the Greens by Alex McPhee from his favourite pocket, not even McPhee
Senior could get a hand on that one. The Greens were within reach, 7
points behind at the quarter.
Greens
2.1-13
vs Mongrels 3.2-20
Second Quarter:
It
was Mongrel mania in the second. Manned up in the middle, the Greens
struggled to get loose. Mick was trying to chase down Greeny and Ben was
cutting of kicks to Martin with strong work over head. Cooper and Nabil
continued to battle hard in the rucks with Nabil winning the taps, but
Cooper going in hard at ground level and getting the ball out to the
runners. Robbo was finding a lot of space and set up Scott W for 2 more
goals, making the most of every opportunity. Despite hard chasing by David
Rae Robbo went on to kick another for the Mongrels. Tyler Barratt stepped
up to stop the Mongrel momentum and took some impressive marks across the
half back line. The Greens were kept in the game by another snap and goal
from Alex.
Greens
3.3-21 vs Mongrels 6.3-39
Third
Quarter:
The
Greens didn't have much to say at the half, they were playing well, but it
didn't convert to goals. Their defense was solid all game providing
pressure through Scott J, Tyler B and David Rae. The Mongrels had the edge
in goal kicking going into the second half with a 3 goal lead. The 3rd was
a hottly contested quarter both defenses working hard. Jezza and Todd were
proving their worth in the backline for the Mongrels, rebounding well,
despite the hustle of rooky Green, Michael Mangan. Scott J shut down the
Mongrel forwards with constant pressure, often coming from 2 or 3 back in
the pack to punch the ball clear. Tyler Barratt continued to back himself
for big marks and David Rae started to get the run going off half back,
reading the ball well and clearing it out. Sean Quinn after making options
all day, converted for his first goal. Does he win the battle of the
bionic knees? Alex kicked another goal on a tight angle for his 3rd, just
don't ask him to kick one from a set shot in front of goals! Ben and
Greeny had the run in the middle, with Martin and Mick huffing and puffing
in their wake. Ben and Robbo filled the scoring gap for the Mongrels with
goals on the run. The quarter was even.
Greens
5.4-34 vs Mongrels 8.6-54
Final
Quarter:
The
final quarter and the pressure did not let up. A few quick goals and the
Greens would have a sniff. Kevin came on for the Greens and battled hard
to move the ball forward on several occasions. A series of handballs from
the Greens defense ended in the hands of Martin and one side step later he
straightened up for a goal. Robbo would not be denied in his first game of
the season and put through his third. Coach Greeny came good when his team
needed it with 2 last quarter goals. Martin snapped one final goal for the
Greens from the boundary line, but it was too late. Mongrels held on for
their first win.
Another great game in Portland. Signs are very good for the upcoming
tournament June 14, with 20 players out for metro footy. We need to get
fitter and work more as a team, only 2 weeks to go!! So get out to
training and train hard.
