Build-Up
to US Nationals 2007 with Grizzlies
Portland Power
players have combined with Seattle in the following matches in recent
weeks as we build up to our Nationals campaign:
August 25th - Chicago at Seattle (Issaquah) - Grizzlies win
September 8th - Chicago at Seattle (Issaquah) - Grizzlies win
September 15th - PNWAFL Final in Vancouver - Cougars defeat
Grizzlies
October 13/14 - Nationals in Louisville
PNWAFL
Grand Final Tournament
Here's the write up
about the games on the weekend. Thanks to all the Portland players who
made the trip (Ben, Chuck, Clay, Martin, Morgan, Robbo, Scott, Sean-Paul
and Tyler). The best turn out yet to an BC match. Everyone played
important roles for the Seattle team. New recruit Sean-Paul booted a huge
torpedo punt goal in his first game and amused the crowd with his Gaelic
pass to himself, on the run (rather than bouncing it).
Will have another good bunch heading to nationals October 13/14 in
Louisville.
Cougars Win the Cup
After a home and away season dominated by the powerful Eagles, the Cougars
took to the field (under Captain - Ted Murray, Vice Captain - Ward Frost
and Vice Captain - Brad Jorgensen) for the first game in the round robin
grand final tournament, determined not to go down without a final attempt
to outplay their Eagles foe.
And fight the Cougars did!! To a man everyone put their bodies on the line
and put in an inspired performance. Albeit under stressful circumstances
with a 50 metre penalty being awarded to the Eagles as the final siren
sounded. A goal would have robbed the Cougars of a hard fought victory! 35
metres out! Alas, as if scripted by a hollywood screenwriter the ball was
kicked slightly wide and the Cougars sealed a 3 point win! Victory over
the Eagles at last!
Game #1 Final Score
Vancouver Cougars
3.6.24 DEFEATING Burnaby
Eagles 3.3.21
This was followed up with Seattle comfortably beating the Eagles in the
second game, knocking them out of contention all together and ending their
season.
Game #2 Final Score
Seattle
Grizzlies
9.6.60 DEFEATING Burnaby
Eagles 5.5.35
Given that both Seattle and Vancouver were guaranteed a spot in the Grand
Final the third round robin game was cancelled and both teams prepared for
the "big one".
The stage was set for a classic Seattle v Vancouver Grand Final, and the
Cougar boys were not to be denied, taking an early lead, maintaining a
slendor margin throughout the first 3 qtrs, then bagging 3 goals 2 behinds
to 2 goals 1 behind (Seattle) in the fourth for a great victory!!!
As with past Cougar Grand Finals we didn't go unscathed, notching up 1
blood nose (Ryan) and a deep headcut (Sam) which required a visit to the
UBC hospital for stitches before recuperating at Mahoney's. It even looked
like umpire Grills would have to be stretchered off after being collected
by an errant Eagle in their game against Seattle.

Portland Greens
Thanks to everyone for coming out Sunday. We had the biggest turn out
ever for a local metro game with 15 players and many spectators. The
mongrels had a big win (partly due to all the new Aussies and hungover
Greens!). Afterwards we had a great time eating hotdogs and swilling beers
at the Greens. Thanks again for hosting the after game do. Will be setting
up another game for July 22.

remaining 3 for me guys)
The Portland Mongrels posted their first win over the Portland Greens
Sunday June 3. In another tight tussle the Mongrels came from behind in
the last quarter. The Greens had been in front by a goal the whole game.
Without Jezza in the last quarter the Greens were outscored by the
Mongrels 4 goals to 6. Experience paved the way in the last quarter with
McPhee taking full advantage of the lack of umpiring!!
Portland
v Tigers v Saints - Saturday June 16
at Manhattan
Park, Burien (Seattle - next to SeaTac Airport)
In their first
trip to Seattle in two years, Portland Power have defeated the Seattle
Tigers and the Seattle Saints on their home turf at Manhattan Park.
After a winless season to date, the Power had their strongest squad of the
year, with 13 players making the trek North.
GAME 1
Seattle Saints: 13.9-87
DEFEATED
Seattle Tigers: 4.8-32
Goals:
Saints -
Anfinson 6, Hales 3, Aitken 2, Sams 1, Muller 1
Tigers - Cleary 2, Donlen 1, VanVuren 1
The Saints took on the
Tigers in the opening match of the day. The tigers were missing a couple
of key players and took the field with only 9. The saints had the numbers
and took control early. The Tigers fought hard lead by Skipper Darren
Hogben, but to no avail. Saints came out winners
and looked like the team
to beat.
GAME 2
Portland Power:
9.8-62
DEFEATED
Seattle
Tigers: 2.8-20
Goals:
Power - Coventry 2, Green 2, Kyle 2, Cover 1, Robertson 1
Tigers - Donlen 1, Morton 1
Portland took on the Seattle Tigers in the second game. The depleted
Tigers would turn out to be no match for the fresh Power players. Numbers
were on our side with 4 players on the interchange. Portland hit the
ground running and never looked back. The stage was set early on with a
nice pass, mark and then goal from Scott Johnson, which went straight
through the middle on a tough angle. The ball was won continually in the
ruck by Morgan and Portland had a lot of the ball. The Tigers played hard
and roved several of Morgan's taps through Morton of the half back and
Tiger Coach Donlen was looking dangerous at half forward. The second half
we cut Morton off and stayed on the wily Veteran Donlen. With Clay
shutting down Cleary and solid performances across the field, Portland ran
out easy victors.
GAME 3
Portland Power:
11.9-75
DEFEATED
Seattle Saints:
2.6-18
Goals:
Power - Coventry 4, Green 3, Luminato 2, Cyphery 1, Cover 1
Saints - Bartlett 1, Purcell 1
Some key match ups were set up before the game, with much concern about
the Saints big guns, Jeff "Fingers" Purcell and Josh
"pretty boy" Anfinson. Clay set his sights on Anfinson and the
mid-field kept their eye on Fingers. Morgan again controlled the ruck
throughout the game no matter who they threw at him. The Saints were
stacking the back half in an effort to create some run. Their plan back
fired as Morgan hit the ball back to Lumi and Martin. Chuck started
running of the half back and the forward line didn't let us down. We had a
win in our sights coming in to the second half. Continual pressure across
the field saw the saints stutter. Clay's man on man with Anfinson saw the
big forward crumble, as he missed goal after goal. Fingers was tagged for
much of the game and was also quiet. After missing some sitters in the
first half, lumi finally came right with two goals. New recruit Ben capped
off a great day with an inspirational run ,which started at half back. He
busted his way through three contests and finished with a goal. Portland
came out on top against the in form Saints.
All in all it was a great day for footy and particularly for Portland
Power. Great to have some of our regulars back and the new recruits all
played great. First gamers were Michael "Robbo" Robertson
(Aussie), Ben Cyphery and Kyle Schick. Aussie Rules Football is alive and
well in Portland.
Check your email for upcoming events.
Thanks to everyone who came up.

Goals:
Power - M.Coventry 2, J.Molner 1, J.Mcphee 1, A.McPhee 1, Brett 1
Saints - Purcell 3, Bartlett 3, Aitken 2, Stearns 2, Young 1
Had a great time playing in Chehalis last weekend. Portland took on the
Seattle Saints in the first game. We played 9 aside with two 20 min
halves. It was a very competitive game. With the help of a couple of
tigers in the first half, Portland held their own throughout the game.
Inaccuracy under pressure would be our eventual downfall...
GAME 2
Seattle Tigers:
13.4.82
DEFEATEDSeattle Saints: 5.10.40
Goals:
Tigers - Parker 5, Cleary 4, Richards 2, Hogben 1, Donlen 1
Saints - Goals - Purcell 2, Winkler 1, Orozko 1, Rubesch 1
GAME 3
Seattle Tigers: 13.12.90
Portland Power: 4.1.25
Goals:
Tigers - Parker 3, Hogben 3, Tucker 2, Bartlett 2, Rubesch 2, Cleary 1
Power - Coventry, Green, J.McPhee, and ?
The final game was between Portland and the Seattle Tigers. Without any
extra players, Portland played with two 13 year olds down forward, subbing
with our one sub, another 13 year old. We got off to a roaring start with
the first goal from Greeny. Portland never gave up until the final siren,
but the Tigers were just too good.
All in all it was a great day for footy. Considering our inexperience
Portland showed some great passages of play and if we can add some more
experience back to the line up for June 16 in Seattle, we can really give
them a run for their money.
Thanks to everyone who came up.

We successfully hosted the Seattle Grizzlies April 14 at Duniway Park.
Seattle took the game seriously and brought down their best ever squad to
challenge Portland. Portland fielded a very inexperienced side with three
players having their first ever games of footy (Will from rugby, Alex 13
yrs and Brett 13 yrs). We took on a much more experienced Seattle side in
12 on 12 game with 4 x 20 minute quarters. Seattle's match fitness and
intensive training schedule has paid off and they ran all over Portland in
the first quarter. Portland rallied in the second, still outclassed, but
fought hard for a couple of well earned goals. Despite Portland's
determination, Seattle stayed on top the whole game for a convincing win.
Portland can be proud that we fought it out down to the last bounce.
Despite the score, Seattle definitely earned their victory.

The series now stands at 2-0 for the Greens. Both games have been highly

Had
a great time yesterday in our first metro game. We had 9 players show up;
Martin, Lumi, John Molner, John McPhee, John's son Alex, Peter Tuck, Adam,
Dan and Kyle. The Greens (Martin [C], Alex, John Molner, Peter) took on
the Mongrels (Lumi [C], John McPhee, Dan, Kyle, Adam). It was a very
highly skilled and high scoring affair. The scores seesawed each quarter
due to Adam playing two quarters for each team and kicking a bag of goals,
unmanned down forward.

were:
John
McPhee - won most of the rucks and outmarked everybody;
Alex - the 13 year old goal sneak; and
Kyle - the powerhouse, couldn't even stop him with two bumps!
Add on the rest of our player list and we have a killer metro team this
year to take on Seattle and co. in April. The next local metro game is
April 8, Duniway park, 2-4pm. If anyone has any good names for the two
teams let me know. In the mean time, don't forget to get you player
nominations in.

Journal - Las Vegas, NV
Friday Night
On Friday, the players that could get to Las Vegas early, Martin Coventry,
Hayley Reid, Tyler Barratt and Adam Schneider participated in a workout
with 11 Seattle players to get a feel for the grounds that we would be
playing on. This gave the group great confidence. That night we were
joined by Guy Luminato and John Molnar.
Saturday
Hayley Reid joined a women's team, the team's first meeting, called
Pacific Coast Highway. Player's home locations spread 3000 miles from
Orange County to Portland to Vancouver BC (2 players) to points on the
east coast (Hayley knows more on this). Hayley start at half back and her
team dominated play 31-7 against a team from Milwaukie. The Seattle guys
were very supportive.
The Men's Division II pool was set up in two groups. The first seed in our
group, Dallas, was Seattle's (4th seed) first match. Martin and Guy played
in the middle and were very aggressive on offense and defense and helped
the team with a convincing 62-37 victory aided by the addition of John
Molnar's 2 goals in the last five minutes in the forward pocket position.
Some of the Division III teams were short and Adam (strained achilles and
all) joined the St Louis team as a forward pocket in the first half and
then as a half back in the second half - a potentially good position for
next year. Tyler Barratt played very well for San Diego in the midfield
getting several possessions. St Louis beat the B squad from San Diego
36-16. The only goals scored by San Diego were by Dale from Seattle's
team.
Vancouver, in the other bracket of division II, was very supportive of
Seattle's team and probably hopeful for an all-Northwest division
championship match.
In the afternoon Hayley's team, PCH, showed more cohesiveness and was more
dominant against Arizona 60-6. Unfortunately the men were playing a very
good Baltimore/Washington side at the same time as the women played and
missed the match.
Baltimore/Washington had dominated Calgary (a team that beat Seattle in
the northwest championships in September) in their morning match.
Confidence was high after an exceptional performance against Dallas.
Martin was asked to control the ball for the Seattle side and Guy was
asked to take a defensive role. John played defense for most of the match
and Tyler subbed in at midfield. Baltimore scored two quick goals and
never allowed Seattle to get close. Martin played very well and Guy had
some spectacular possession changing tackles on defense. It was a very
physical match. John helped the Seattle defense control a high scoring
Baltimore/Washington side and Tyler helped gain possession for Seattle in
the middle. B/W won 43-21 over a dinged-up Seattle squad.
Sunday
By Sunday Seattle had lost a few players and some players at much less
than 100 percent but everyone was game to make a big effort to win and
give ourselves a chance to make the final if B/W lost to Dallas. The
energy and effort was impressive for Seattle. Martin and Guy were
impressive again in their roles and Tyler and John were very active and
successful in their positions again. Adam, sore achilles not withstanding,
played at full forward at the end. At the half it was 8-8 after Calgary
tied up the score at the very end of the 1st half. The final score was, I
believe 35-21 (no website information was available). Seattle was
disappointed in the result but not in the effort that was expended.
Portland players were very impressive through the three matches.
Martin and some Seattle players came back in a second match of the day to
join a short-manned Arizona squad against Vancouver. Martin had a chance
to play forward after his great effort in the middle for Seattle. As I
remember, Arizona had a very close loss to Vancouver.
In the Division III championship Las Vegas, a team Seattle joined at the
west region finals, came from behind in the second half against Baton
Rouge to win.
Hayley's team, PCH, was, like Atlanta's team, undefeated after two matches
and would finish as one of the top two teams. The decision was made to
have them move their match to the afternoon as the women's championship
match. Atlanta, which won the title last year and had already won two
tournaments during this year was a confident and formidable foe.
Vancouver, with two players on the PCH squad, and Seattle, with Hayley
Reid on the PCH squad, made for the loudest support group of any of the
championship matches. PCH fought hard and it was a very physical match
against Atlanta. At the end of the match, when PCH was trying to score,
Hayley was left alone at full back and played wonderfully in holding down
a high scoring Atlanta side. Unfortunately, despite PCH's best efforts,
Atlanta won 28-0.
Other Results
Baltimore/Washington dominated the Division II final against Minnesota
67-12, indicating that a Seattle may have been the third best side at the
nationals in Division II.
San Diego won by 21 over Denver in the Division I championship continuing
what has become a long and heated rivalry for national pre-eminence in
American Footy.
Martin Coventry
shares Division II Award
A full list of awards is not available at this time but Portland's own
Martin Coventry won for Most Consistent in Division II (he tied with Stewy
from Vancouver).
This tournament indicates a good future for American footy and for the
Portland Power. I saw a lot and talked to a few of the top players at the
tournament and gained information that I think can help our team. I hope
to share my experiences during the off-season and the next season.
Cheers
