Founded in 2014, the Portland Sockeyes are the women's side of the club. Despite being small in numbers in the early days, the Sockeyes got a strong start by combining with other teams at larger tournaments. They won the USAFL Division 2 National Championships in 2015 by joining the squad from Calgary. At the 2016 and 2017 Nationals tournament, the Sockeyes, fielding a team made predominantly of Portland players, with support from a few members of other women's teams, notched two more Division 2 National Championships. Having won three consecutive Division 2 National Championships, and being able to field a full team, the Sockeyes were bumped up to Division 1 in 2018. In addition to success at Nationals, the Portland women took top honors at the 2016, 2018, and 2023 Western Regionals tournaments.
After taking two seasons off due to the pandemic, the Sockeyes are excited to be back on the pitch. Under the leadership of our Head Coach, Phil Marshall of the men's team and Assistant Coach Brandy Machado, the team has been hard at work to rebuild back to our pre-pandemic levels.
The Sockeyes always welcome and encourage new players to come join the team! No experience or prior sporting background necessary. If you are new to the sport, we'll teach you everything you need to know to get started. Email recruiting@portlandfooty.com or swing by a training if you're interested in joining!
Sockeyes trainings are held at Clinton City Park in SE Portland every Sunday from 3-5 pm and Wednesdays from 6:30-9 pm at Riverdale Grade School, with the exception of weekends we hold Metro League matches. During our Metro League season, we hold men's and women's Metro League games on select Sundays throughout the spring and summer. Check our calendar for specific dates.
